Nomenclature - Basic Organic Compounds

This page provides introductory exercises in naming organic compounds. It will present the following compound types: a) linear alkanes b) linear monoalkenes c) Linear alkanes with a single functional group d) Esters, ethers and ketones. In order to make them obvious, the functional groups and linking groups will be shown in bold immediately after the carbon which they are attached, with the exception of the leftmost carbon,where they will be written first.
When entering the name of the compound, please follow the text and lecture descriptions wiht regards to format. The computer isn't going to recognize any variations on the presentation or spelling. To familiarize yourself with the required format, you should try a few "Show Answer" problems before beginning.

  • When you press "New Compound", a formula will appear to the right of the table
  • Enter the name in the cell and press "Check Answer"
  • Pressing "Show Answer" will display the compound's name and you will no longer be able to submit a nmae for that compound.
