Calculating Eo

This page provides basic exercises for calculating standard potentials. When you press "New Problem", an unbalanced redox reaction with its Eo will appear. Calculate the value of Eo, enter it in the answer cell and press "Check Answer." Results will appear in the main table. The questions will provide a redox reaction. Determination of the potential does not require a balanced equation, but the oxidation and reduction must be properly identified.

  • Be careful about the sign. Positive values can be entered as is (do not use a "+"sign). Negative values must have a "-" sign.
  • If you get a problem "incorrect", you should redo it and recheck your answer.
  • Most of the half reactions shown should be in one of the tables in your text, but you can also open a window with the potentials used for this page by clicking on the "Display Potentials" button.
  • Pressing the "Show Answer" will cause the solution to appear and you will no longer be able to submit an answer for that problem.
